This week on the internet: Vaccine memes and the end of Yahoo Answers...

Welcome to the Friday edition of Internet Insider, where we dissect the week online. Today: Memes imagine our post-vaccine lives RIP Yahoo Answers, which gave us some great questions Khloé Kardashian’s team is trying to scrub a photo from the internet Sign up to receive this newsletter in your inbox. BREAK THE INTERNET Preparing for our post-vaccine lives This weekend, I get my second shot of a COVID-19 vaccine. Like a lot of people, I’m thinking about all the activities I can do once I’m in the clear. By the middle of the month, all adults in the U.S. will be eligible to get the vaccine. It took over a year to get here, but there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel. And, naturally, new memes about our post-COVID plans. This “being vaccinated does NOT mean” meme takes the plots of movies and books to inform everyone what to not do this summer. For example, no one should be trying to recreate the plot of Midsommar just because they are vaccinated. There’s also lots of talk about how we actually make vaccine appointments. Many of us have relied on tips and guidance shared on social media. Huge Ma, the creator of the website TurboVax, got a write-up in the Cut recently for helping New Yorkers find available vaccine appointments. There are online groups now for probably every major U.S. city to help people with COVID-19 vaccine appointments. Getting an appointment was easier over the last couple of months if you were extremely online. That shouldn’t have been the case, but hopefully, the process will get easier. Then we can finally focus on all the fun, dumb things we want to do this summer—like leave our homes. —Tiffany Kelly, culture editor SPONSORED 4 of the most reliable sites for past life readings Maybe you believe in reincarnation, or the idea that before you were you, you were someone else–and before you were that person, you likely lived other lives as well. A past life reading can tell you about one or more of those lives, and help you uncover what you may be holding on to. READ MORE NOSTALGIA RIP, Yahoo Answers If you have any pressing questions you need answered, think quick: Yahoo Answers is shutting on May 4. A letter sent to Yahoo Answers community members states: “While Yahoo Answers was once a key part of Yahoo’s products and services, it has become less popular over the years as the needs of our members have changed.” This truly is the end of an era. Yahoo Answers, which debuted in 2005, gave us one of the most enduring memes: “How is babby formed?” And we can’t forget the follow-up question on that 2006 post: “How girl get pragnent?” This was the nature of Yahoo Answers—cringeworthy, often misspelled questions, and answers, that weren’t always accurate or factually correct. And now they are part of internet culture history. —Audra Schroeder, senior writer CELEBRITIES Khloé Kardashian’s bikini photo saga Khloé Kardashian’s team is threatening legal action to remove a photo of Kardashian posted online, a move that’s cofounding parts of the internet. The photo features Kardashian in a bikini standing near a pool while holding her phone. To an untrained eye, the photo does not appear to be Photoshopped or manipulated. Also: She looks good in it! But as the photo was shared online, it started meeting pushback. People who tried tweeting the photo of Kardashian were met with DMCA takedown notices or had their Twitter accounts locked for copyright infringement. This incident highlights the insecurity that impossible beauty standards can have on someone like Kardashian, who has made an effort to get a photo that might not have been meticulously edited or wholly approved by her and her team offline. (Which, due to the Streisand Effect, probably won’t happen anytime soon.) —Michelle Jaworski, staff writer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKBrgOxORdU In this week's episode of Behind the Seams, we explain why the MCU's costumes are secretly kind of... boring? How Zemo dancing in ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ became a meme...
The Daily Dot
People appreciate a good dance move, but in the case of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it’s the utter awkwardness of Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) dancing at a club in Madripoor in “Power Broker” that made the Marvel villain-turned-antagonist into a meme superstar. But nearly a week after Zemo’s dance moves spread far and wide, Marvel gave fans what they really wanted: more dancing Zemo. When the seconds-long clip of Zemo dancing first debuted, it didn’t take long for people to latch onto Zemo’s utter relatability even though he’s incredibly wealthy, technically a royal, someone who killed a Wakandan king and tried to frame Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) for it, and puppeteered the Avengers’ falling out. https://twitter.com/bradwhipple/status/1378012460922376194 https://twitter.com/nrdfactory/status/1378002631491264512 https://twitter.com/Iokisbitchh/status/1377886466739740675 https://twitter.com/TeeDotally/status/1378150425753481216 https://twitter.com/mrvlbarnes/status/1377922636462833665 https://twitter.com/germanjedi/status/1378293937560027136 And of course, in the episode’s wake, @zemodancingto, which does exactly as its username advertises, emerged to gift us the mashup of Zemo dancing to any song. https://twitter.com/zemodancingto/status/1379116947057618947 But the call for an extended cut of Zemo dancing in Falcon and the Winter Soldier started in earnest a few days later after Brühl told Entertainment Weekly that there was more footage of his dancing “[That moment] was improvised when I saw the crowd dancing, going loco,” Brühl explained. “I felt the beat and was like, Zemo has been sitting in a dodgy German prison cell for years. So, he needs to let off some steam and show his moves. Let's go for it! I enjoyed so much the reaction of Anthony [Mackie] and Sebastian [Stan] looking at me. Still, I was 100 percent sure that they would cut it out [of the show]. I was really surprised and happy that they kept it. It was a long dance. There's more to it, but they cut this little moment.” There’s a logical explanation as to why we didn’t get to see more footage in the show. It’s a matter of editing, and even the brief shot we see before Sharon Carter comes in to drive the episode’s John Wick-esque plot further already stands out. But the revelation that there was more footage of Brühl’s dance moves led to fans calling to see what they dubbed the “Zemo Cut.” On Thursday, Marvel delivered. https://twitter.com/falconandwinter/status/1380249091645538310 https://twitter.com/liholovesloki/status/1380256526892474370 People lost their minds, especially when they learned that Marvel also posted a one-hour edit of Zemo dancing on YouTube. And some took to comparing Marvel’s speed in delivering the “Zemo Cut” to how long Warner Bros. took to releasing the Snyder Cut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nEzCv5u1O8 https://twitter.com/kingvalxyrie/status/1380251966249566208 https://twitter.com/_winterbarnes/status/1380304353513275393 https://twitter.com/H11mGuy/status/1380283021996163073 https://twitter.com/eavoss/status/1380252864602284032 While you can see why people are comparing Disney+’s delivery of footage fans asked for to Warner Bros.’ version of that, it doesn’t work far beyond a surface level. Zack Snyder’s Justice League involved some reshoots, getting a new score, and a $70-million budget—which included new visual effects—to put it all together. In the case of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the assembly was likely far simpler. The crew had to find the footage of Brühl’s dance moves among everything that was shot from Falcon and the Winter Soldier and edit it together if it wasn’t already edited that way; for the hour-long cut, someone had to then stitch it together. If anything, Marvel releasing the Zemo Cut is far closer to its reaction to “Agatha All Along,” Agatha Harkness’ new theme song, after it debuted on WandaVision. People clamored onto it, played the scene on repeat, and ripped the audio to loop it into TikToks, and in response, Marvel released the soundtrack for episode 7 a full three days before it was scheduled to debut on streaming platforms. And once it did, “Agatha All Along” climbed to the top of the iTunes charts. Fittingly, there was also an edit of Zemo dancing to "Agatha All Along." https://twitter.com/zemodancingto/status/1380269622197370880 https://twitter.com/derekhero0178/status/1380266032003231748 Doing something like that, or uploading the “Zemo Cut” is a win-win. Marvel and Disney+ get praised and it got people to be vocally excited for Falcon and the Winter Soldier ahead of the new episode. And given the far more mixed reception to Falcon and the Winter Soldier compared to WandaVision, it really works in Marvel and Disney+’s favor to occasionally throw fans a bone. https://twitter.com/sputnikstucky/status/1380260946346659844 The post How Zemo dancing in ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ became a meme appeared first on The Daily Dot.......
Yes, Chris Meloni Knows the Internet Appreciates His ‘Big Cake’ Butt...
If you need any more proof that Chris Meloni has the best sense of humor, look no further than Twitter, where the actor is hilariously celebrating his own rear end. The rekindled obsession with Meloni’s butt started on Wednesday, when a fan snapped a pic of him wearing tight pants while shooting “Law & Order: Organized Crime” in Brooklyn. The photo, posted in a neighborhood Facebook group, quickly went viral for, well, obvious reasons. SVU is filming in park slope this week and someone in the neighborhood facebook group posted this photo of chris meloni pic.twitter.com/A2fAENk05u — peter hess (@PeterNHess) April 7, 2021 As the internet marveled at Meloni’s backside, one fan tweeted at him, asking, “You wanna explain why you have so much cake??” alongside a GIF of Patrick Star from “Spongebob Squarepants.” Also Read: Here's How Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler Returned to 'Law & Order: SVU' After a Decade Away Meloni, game for acknowledging his butt was a trending topic, responded, “Sure – big birthday (60), big boy (200 lbs), big cake.” Sure- big birthday(60), big boy(200 lbs), big cake https://t.co/lmkZ5JKFWe — Chris Meloni (@Chris_Meloni) April 8, 2021 It would be enough if Meloni’s response was a “one and done” acknowledging that he’s aware people are talking about him. But the actor apparently has no shame in celebrating himself, because he’s kept on replying to tweets and joking around with fans, playing into their “thirst trap” memes. I mean, come on — can we all admit it takes a good man to announce to Twitter that his butt isn’t hairy? The other Melonis are trending, not me https://t.co/uBvpSCC03x — Chris Meloni (@Chris_Meloni) April 8, 2021 It’s not Vicki, it’s not https://t.co/qjy0TVBLz0 — Chris Meloni (@Chris_Meloni) April 9, 2021 It’s worth nothing that Meloni is probably used to this kind of unusual praise by now — remember when Buzzfeed made a listicle called “Literally Just 17 Photos Of Chris Meloni’s Butt?” He’s not even a stranger to thirst tweets in general, as he proved during a 2019 interview where he read aloud tweets about everything from his overall attractiveness to his attention-grabbing behind. Meloni is obviously proving with his recent Twitter activity that he’s still as humble and down-to-earth as ever — even when it comes to the internet once again yelling about his butt.
